Hi

Have just bought a sat nav unit ( i love techie stuff) but it set me wondering if i would then be getting rid of my selection of road and O S maps. I have a feeling i will use the sat nav and keep the maps ,what do you reckon?

recently got a sat nav (Tom Tom, thanks for the advice Club 80-90!) and love it - great for getting from A to B, but..you can't beat poring over a map to plan your holiday, weekend away or even a day trip. I won't be getting rid of my maps, that's for sure. :)

Having used a fair few different sat nav systems civvie and military. I hate the bloody things! Maps, Maps and always Maps! If you go wrong with a map you only have yourself to blame and its generally wiser to keep quite about such things. As opposed to too many pub conversations nowadays about how and where Tom Tom screwed you last!

We have both. In my experience the maps come in very handy when the sat nav sends you off up the hills of waddy and gets you lost.

I personally hate the sat nav (edited: but the driver doesn't, most of the time!), mainly because it doesn't matter which voice you have on there, by the end of the journey they are seriously starting to get on my nerves :x

But it comes in handy when I am worn out from co-piloting and need to have a kip in the back :ok

We use satnav mainly on my PDA/Phone Memory map which displays OS walking maps, its absolutely fantastic, it also runs IGO8 and TOMTOM which we often use to find places when driving, but you can't beat sitting there with a map spread across you both discussing where to adventure next, thumbs up for both

Used my garmin (Doris) last summer in France. It was great I found myself in so many great places that I never even knew I was heading for. Never go for shortest route option unless you are driving a Doka. Maps are more fun though and dont nag if you go off route!!

Best bit about sat nav is you never feel alone 8)

Maps are brill, especially OS ones! OK, the sat nav is good but I wouldn't get rid of the maps.

When we moved into this house the guy before had worked from home. He had pasted OS maps over an entire wall in what was his office - they covered the whole of North Yorkshire, Cumbria and up to Durham. Fantastic! Think that may have been what sold the house. Can't bear to paint over them! (Sad or what?)

i have a extensive map libary in the camper, never use them other than at a planning meeting, have tomtom on my phone/pda which i use mostly for the last 5 miles... i mostly have the voice switched off unless im in a busy built up area, there is no substitute for a paper map, however, the sat nav is much safer, and unlike the previous navigator, wont pisss off with another bloke!

Keep the maps, if only for a bigger overview than on the sat nav secreen. It's a pain zooming the sat nav in & out all the time to find where you are relative to somewhere else that you know. We bought one just to make European travel easier and use it in conjunction with a fairly basic road atlas for general directions. Don't forget that a sat nav is only as up to date as its maps; old printed maps also go out of date but at least you can get a general idea of which direction to travel from a printed map when your sat nav decides to have a few minutes off !!

In all honesty I think the biggest advantage of a sat nav is for unknown long distance runs, it certainly made going round the Paris ring roads in the dark a lot easier than looking for sings, road numbers etc gleaned from a (probably) out of date map at not a great scale. Being talked through the lane changes makes life a lot easier.

And you don't end up having a row with your navigator as to who's fault it is you're lost in the middle of nowhere in the dark with nothing but stray dogs and industrial units for company, you can both blame the stupid little box :D
