oil slick in the reservoir....is it definately pooped???

sorry if my threads are same old same old but im still strugglin with her van...........after the frozen expansion tank and subsiquent destroyed top hose on new years eve........ive put it back together and it runs as normal.....still losing water and needs only topping up every couple of days.....but her work is only 4-5 mile round trip....so fine for that for now.................but the oil in the reservoir yesterday was unbelieveable..........but doesnt seem to be using any oil really.............doesnt overheat.and runs reasonably smoothly....wouldnt say absolutely perfect sounding but ok............any ideas chaps..cant find any leaks anywhere????............its startin to get on my t**s a bit now....................is it definately time for a lil' 1y decapitation?....if it is then so be it...but dont fancy doin all that for it to be summat else.............i accept all suggestions with open arms(and legs...IM DESPERATE!")!!.........regards

come on guys throw me a bone....im in the stickiest situation since sticky the stick insect got stuck on a sticky bun.......am i ok running it for short distances with that much oil floating around?........im absolutely baffled!!!

yes ian it does....i replaced the "o" ring in it last year,but dont know how effective it was......do you think i could possibly need a new one....if so is it just the square bit that the filter fixes to,or is it the whole lot that bolts to the block??............................

I'm led to believe that it's a common area for oil & water to come into contact ... I believe we have the same issue on our Scirocco II to a lesser extent perhaps.

I'm not well versed on the oil burning engines ... having never felt the need to break one :lol:

If the engine froze, and afterwards the oil problem became worse, then (imho) it sounds like a head gasket.

The oil cooler is the easiest to check, so I would look there first, just really to eradicate it.

It would probably be good to have the head checked for straightness and that the waterjacket is intact if you do have to take it off.
