CT sounds very very ill

Ok I've been having nothing but trouble recently with my hateful CT lump, now it was running okish before the crack seal popped on me. So I took engine out, removed clutch and flywheel to re-place the crack seal.

Since refitting it sounds like a bag of heavy hammers thimping around, I wouldn't say nails as its a deeper sound,

So out of interest by replacing the crank oil seal could I have accidently done anything to cause this? I can't see how I could have, but a second opinion woul dbe great.

I've removed the ht leads 1by1 and there is no real difference to the noise, so I've ruled out a lead/plug issue.

The only other symtoms are it doesn't like idling during warm up, fine when cold and fine when fully warm, and the last time I drive it when the cracnk seal wnet there was a faint miss fire on overrun, hence me checking the plugs again.

Any help would be appreciated

Have you checked your crankshaft end float since replacing the seal?

erm nope, but I didn't notice any movement/play when changing the seal

It looks like I'm going to have to bite the bullet and buy a recon lump, the last thing I want to do really but I've had enough of it now

Don't be hasty was it making a noise before you replaced the seal.

Not that I was aware of, seemed down on power and alittle lumpy but that was it.

The noise is getting worse each time I start it now, the higher you rev, the deeper the knock/rattle

I had something very similiar on mine 2 years ago. Turned out the cylinder head nuts had somehow worked themselves slightly loose and every time the engine fired it would cause the head to jump up and back down again! Sounds dramatic but with an Aircooled this can happen as there is no coolant to cause problems. Could account for the lumpy running too.

Heads are tight, although what I did notice while doing the crank seal was that the main nuts holding the block together were loose, as in most were hand tight, so its possible the damage was already done.

oh well the fight with the hateful CT lump goes on
