Evening all
I need to replace my speedo/clock cluster as it has seen better days, I'v noticed a few clusters on ebay with the speedo/tacho combo.
Is it possible to wire up the tacho to my 1.7D?
Cheers
Jimi

You'll need a diesel dash with diesel tacho. Look for the orange heaterplug lamp and 4000rpm mark just outside the thick green band.
Sadly I think diesel revcounter dashes are the rarer more expencive type of dash as most vans didn't have revcounters (optional, though some late turbos seem to have got lucky) and the posher Caravelles which did have them standard tend to be petrol. 1.7D should have buzzer of doom so dash already has tacho signal going to it.
You could get a petrol dash and use a converter, can't remember the brand name off my head, but someone will no doubt.

1st thing, don't bother with trying to fit a gasser tach. You are much better off being patient to wait for a good diesel one. BUT even before that, you will have to check to see if if your alternator has the fitting/output circuit. On the back there should be 3 connectors -the large guage for charging, the small, red wire which is the exciter/warning lamp circuit and then the "w" circuit. This is where the tach gets it's signal. If you don't have an alternator with it, then it may be easier to replace it with one that does. Then the worse part of the job would be to run a new wire from the alternator to the dash. I would suggest getting a bentley or wiring diagram to understand what is involed. VERY easy if the right components are installed.
