LPG - Poor/Non Starting on petrol

Van runs on gas and starts on petrol - I couldn't for the life of me figure out why my van wasn't starting in the cold - put on new spark plugs, leads etc. Battery was good. etc. etc.

Finally put in some new petrol in desparation to hope to clean out the injectors and it works fine now! I've asked around and there are a couple of reasons for this:
  • Petrol 'goes off' after a couple of months.
  • Oil companies provide petrol with different properties at different times of the year - changes approximately 4 times a year to work best in different temperatures.
I'd had petrol in for months (since it only uses a tiny bit to start on), so it was old petrol that wasn't quite so good and probably a 'summer' mix as well. So if you are having trouble starting it might be due to old petrol!

The problem was fixed with fresh petrol - I was just letting everyone know in case they are suffering the same problem!

Thanks

its a fact that modern petrol goes off quickly,, and it turns into oily gloop that ruins carbs etc if you leave it long enough.
never used to happen in the good old days.
seems to lose its ability to explode really quickly,,, a couple of months at best. i think that was the problem with mine when it refused to start recently.

Flibbertigibbet wrote:Sorry if I am not getting the jist of your question but why are you starting on petrol in the first place? If your van is converted to run on L.P.G. the only time you need petrol is if you run out of gas
My van has a carb and is converted to run on gas (LPG). I have to start her on petrol and then switch over when she's warmed up. Is this wrong I thought like all ladies of a certon age they need warming up to perform at there best. :?:

Helga,
we have 3....all on carb. Even the last couple of mornings the velle has fired on the first turn of the key...the camper needs a slug of gas, then turn key. Basically, turn to postition 2, so it clicks, delivers gas, turn off, repeat, then start. My installer set the system to give a longer initial delivery if required. Only run on petrol 10 miles a week to keep the petrol lines clear, and to stop the petrol going off. Have 1/4 tank in there at the most. Plus they are all 2.1 on carbs (NOT injected), so they need the super unleaded, and there are only a couple of garages around here selling it now.

Can't see any reason why yours shouldn't start on LPG if you are running carbs.

cheers

Ok, I've had a full tank of petrol for a few months now, which of course over time is slowly decreasing, so I switched over to petrol the other day to see how it ran. Absolutely dreadful. Cutting out, jerking and even stalling.

The bus now at the garage being `tuned,` but I was wondering about the `old` petrol that's already in it. Does anyone know whether a `petrol additive` might give it a longer life, if so which one?

The reason I filled up in the first place with petrol is simply because I did not want to be left stranded, therefore achieving some `peace of mind.`

Eric.

You could try an octane booster, but I think the best option is to have your tank drained

Eats, can I buy that `octane booster` at Tesco or do I have to contact Shell or BP?
