Long cooling pipe query

Hi all

My 1.9 DG 1989 camper has just blown a joint where the long coolant pipe joins a rubber hose just level with the back wheel (before going into a black plastic tower gizmo). I'm having to get a longer rubber pipe to fix it but the info I've found on the forum has, as always, been very helpful. I do have a query though. Initially when I separated the joint I could see part of a corroded pipe in the rubber hose and assumed that the last inch or so of the pipe had corroded and separated thereby causing the leak. Once I got the rubber hose off completely I had the chance to do some investigating and it turned that the loose piece was a badly corroded 32mm dia end-piece (with rib). This was not the only loose item though, there was a 38mm white plastic collar which appeared to have come from the end of the long metal pipe (which has a rough edge to it). The long pipes on this vehicle are 38mm and are metal so what is going on? I thought that later pipes were 38mm plastic or is that only the case for replacements and I'm a bit worried that the 32mm end piece has come from somewhere upstream but I find that hard to imagine. Any suggestions?

PS. I can't find anybody who supplies short lengths of 38mm hose, it's a metre or nowt, any ideas?

Thanks

Bit confused..... (not difficult!)
Could you post pics of exactly where?
I think you mean the following bits....the 'serrated' looking pipes are attached to two short lengths of metal (on my van) pipe, which pass through the two holes in the bulkhead and then insert into the fat pipes which wind their way around the inside of engine bay. They are subject to considerable vibration etc and either the metal pipes and/or the hose unions came develop small leaks. And we all know what happens to small leaks!
I had awful job separating the corroded metal pipe from the rubber hose - take great care not to damage hose
good luck
