Dunno, my 1.6td 2wd was mega on fuel. I did Holland & back on 60L. There would be no comparison.
It will be interesting to hear what mpg diesel owners are getting from a Syncro.

Down to around 30mpg nailing it up and down the hills here, on a motorway run its better, sometimes high 30's. Due to the fairly good range I don't often get to do a pure motorway/pure local tank, most are mixture, low 30's. I don't drive much more than lorrys though (slower than coaches). Gets alot more wind and engine noise once you go over 55 so I'd emagine it'll drink badly soon after 60mph.

Like that, very longterm figure, will stick it in de Wiki... with some of the others.
Averages from Wiki so far:
Diesel: Low= 31.31 High=34.64
Petrol: Low= 20.0 High = 23.50
Irrespective of body type, tyres, engine or usage...

I think the variations in fuel consumption (not petrol versus diesel) are related to how long you spend in top gear. You will only ever get the best mpg in top. Maybe the ability of the diesel to hold onto top gear improves the mpg figure, on the 16" 3700 rpm comes at 115kmh or 65mph (Sat nav) , this is max torque, or where the engine can burn the most amount of fuel. This means that except for exceptional circs you never have to drop out of 4th on A roads/ motorway. There is such a big difference in economy between town driving and motorway driving that is not so noticeable on newer cars.
