Hiya mate, don't mess about, buy an Ebber or a Propex ... if you want to Winter camp you're only postponing the inevitable

At 0 or below camp gaz (butane) won't vaporize, so won't supply any heat. :run
LPG (propane) vaporises to -40. :ok

Is this figure for butane correct? I know it isn't meant to be great in very cold weather but I've been camping wild (urban wild) in the van for the last 5 days and my butane hasn't let me down at all.... not even when the whole water system and toilet flush were frozen solid! I would like to know how much colder it needs to get before I freeze through lack of heating in the van - propex is my friend!

Butane vapor point varies -11 to 0 depending on which grade of butane it is. Most butane bottles are a mix of butane and propane, but do not blend with each other, so propane will release and burn in subzero conditions leaving the butane.

While butane and propane are different chemical compounds, their properties are similar enough to be useful in mixtures. Butane and Propane are both saturated hydrocarbons. They do not react with other. Butane is less volatile and boils at 0.6 deg C. Propane is more volatile and boils at - 42 deg C. Both products are liquids at atmospheric pressure when cooled to temperatures lower than their boiling points. Vaporization is rapid at temperatures above the boiling points. The calorific (heat) values of both are almost equal. Both are thus mixed together to attain the vapor pressure that is required by the end user and depending on the ambient conditions. If the ambient temperature is very low propane is preferred to achieve higher vapor pressure at the given temperature.

Butane (N-Butane or normal butane) has a boiling point, of 31 degrees F. Isobutane (think of this as the premium gasoline of the butane line) has a boiling point of 11 degrees F. Propane by itself has a boiling point of -43 degrees F.

Simply put, at below 31 degrees F, normal butane has difficulty vaporizing which is why the performance of a butane stove drops considerably.

Google is your friend.

If you don't believe me or Google, ask how many at Dubfreeze last year went cold using butane.
