Hi can anybody help i have a 2.1 running on carbs that is when running constantly dripping oil from the dipstick is this a)normal b)a worrying prelude to somethink major or c) fixable

If you mean the dipstick hole, shouldn't of course... checked compressions? I'll let someone else answer that better though, who knows if they do and why.

hi - no it is not leaking from the hole where the dipstick goes into the engine (it was, but a damn good clean sorted that) - it i sleaking further up - the dipstick does not seem to "seal" in its holder.

Have been contemplating this problem...

the engine is 2.1 replacement...when we put it in, the dip stick tube was knocked, and cracked. It was repaired by replacing the damaged section with a piece of rubber tubing, as JK did not list the tube holder, jubilee clipped. Perhaps it is the wrong length, and when we are getting a low reading it is because the dip stick is not going in far enough. Although I think we measured the length, perhaps we got it wrong... would anyone with a 2.1lump be kind enough to measure the dip stick tube...

perhaps a replacement tube now we have realised that they are removed from the engine actually quite easily would be better. Any traders out there got one and at what price??

just to let you know what happened...

replaced dipstick tube....thanks spannerack

still leaked......replaced breather hose that had a pinch/kink in it......thanks headley18!

Now...running lovely....dipstick not waving all over everywhere, and oil where it should be....in the engine

Glad you got this sorted finally, sorry could not find a d/s tube for you, despite having 2 somewhere or other, they'll turn up now.

hi, i have a related problem. Ive had my van for about 5months driven a few thousand miles and its never given me trouble thats not my own fault (lack of fuel!)
It does seem to use a lot of oil though, ive used x2 containers of the stuff. My engine is not smokey ..ever .. and ive never found any oil leaking or on the floor.
Also its very difficult to tell how much oil is left (untill lights.. then buzzer start) as the dipstick never has a layer of oil clear enough to read.

(1989 van, 1.9l wc 78ps, engine believed refurb or replacement 3 years ago)

oh yeh.. im using 15 40 oil too. As i said the van seems to run great and the engine sounds fine too.

200, 500, 1000, 2000?

Have you driven behind yourself ( ) both up a hill under full power and down a hill on the overun?

If not then do you really know for sure its not burning some oil or passing the valve seals?

Ah yeh ive yet to master the skill of driving behind myself, so i'll have to ask a friend to do so for me. Ive pulled the throttle cable whilst standing at the back of the van before and dont get any smoke.

Thing is, the cylinder pressures never build up wehn just revving up much.. if you can both under power, and on the overrun for a while, would give you a much better picture of the engine as far as burning, sucking it out. If really clear, then it must be leaking soemwhere or evaporating!

I had this and it blew the breather hose off at 70mph ...with spectacular results...the engine bay and rear of the van were coated in a black slick
