Hi

I was having a look around to establish wny my heating doesnt work. 2ltr 1982 Aircooled

When I looked underneath I noticed that both heat exchangers didnt look the same. The offside one has a smooth look and looks like the replacment ones you can buy. But the nearside one looks different and kind of looks like a radiator.

Now i noticed that the riser pipe on the offside one is broken but when i went to cheack the nearside i noticed the the riser wasnt attached at all and on further investigation I noticed that the wassnt a hole for the riser to connect to at all!

This is why i have come to the conclusion that its isnt the right exchanger. But why somone would put a different one on, I have no idea.

Can anyone tell me what is going on here. I have added some pics of them below

It looks like one has lost its casing, and all your left with is the internal parts.

You beat me too it Andrew! Aye the radiator you describe is just the heat exchanger minus the covering it needs to work - won't affect the vehicle's running too much but wont provide any warm air either!

You can get 12v heaters - 200w jobs on Ebay are around 25 quid I think....

Just had a look, they look OK but I suppose my only worry is that whilst charging two or three batteries, running the cd player and having my lights on it might be too much for the alternator

theres no cheap way round this..except try getting urself a cheapish propex on ebay (i got one for 140 from an old BT van. They may be old but usually perfectly good and working ok. There is no other way I've ever heard of aprt from eber or porpex. BUT you could get your second heat exchanger replaced with a good S/H one and then fit all the correct pipes etc in place and then wrap with insultation and ensure no gaps or holes and then make sure the thermostat works properly and check / seal any air leaks around doors, roof etc ...then you will start to warm up but from bitter (sorry bout pun) experience its really a matter of being very thorough and ensuring no cold air gets in to replace any amount of wam air you can generate. Sorry to be cynical but i think its realistic.
Propex is v good though.

fit the right bits , as said get a s/h exchanger and then make sure the pods work or wire em open ensure all the pipes are present (no need for any more insulation ) and you will be nice and toasty
