Replacing Water Jacket Gasket - Video

As a viewer of the Samba/Vanagon and C80-90 I find invaluable info on both - but don't think some of you get onto the US site. I have posted about http://www.benplace.com before as I think he does some excellent body/tech descriptions - but this is the best yet if you - like me have been grappling with the idiosynchratic barrel, piston, water jacket, headgasket combination by trying to visualise from outside the engine.

Before i tell you the link - please read the warning about his bandwidth limits - I would hate to be the one who leads to loads of hits tonight/tomorrow on the videos

- if you really are interested in removing barrels and pistons, cleaning up, refitting barrels (w gaskets top and bottom), and refitting heads onto new water jacket gaskets - or want to know why even the experts on here estimate £4-500 to do the job for you (assuming all goes well :shock: ) then imagine doing this with the engine in situ....

When I changed my cylinder heads in situ a couple of years ago I found it quite easy to set each piston in turn to top dead centre and pull the barrel out just *NOT* far enough to pop the rings out of the barrel. This was in order to replace the lower seals which are just a large diamer small section "O" rings and quite stretchy within reason. cleaning the seat is of course a necessity. I know an engine removal is not so difficult but at that time I did find it onerous and chose the in-situ route preferable. This was successful as the engine ran well right up until my recent rebuild due to shot ends. Unfortunatelly the shells cannot be change so easily :roll:
