Went to Elite today...

And found out that the hiccupping we were experiencing on gas, and the erratic idle were due to a lack of a shim underneath the distributor!! Both Mick's amazed that it was running at all...and even more gobsmacked when we said that we hadn't had the dizzy off in the 3.5 years we have had her!!

gas service done (filter changed, valves checked and system set up)
Dizzy removed (was 180 degrees out), shims fitted and dizzy replaced

Couple and bit hours.

Total charge £40! :D

Hopefully, with the shim on the damage done to the engine block by the distributor will not be noticeable, as the shim is wider than the hole the dizzy has made

Oh, and had a play with the laser thermometer...... 96 at the block behind fuel pump, 76 ish on the manifold, 46 at the thermostat housing and 24 ish at the rad!! Hottest was front right as you look at it where exhaust header is as the oil is hottest there apparently and you have the exhaust too! Was around the 100 mark there.

IF anyone knows where I can get a accelerator pump diapragm I would be greatful...1990 2.1 running 1.9 carb. Apparently its letting by a little.

Take care,
Em

Shims...??! I didn't know they had them! Mine hasn't got any, might have to look into that one just to be on the safe side!

Good to hear you're running smoothly again. Cant find any rebuild kits for that carb though, thought there would be at least one on the net somewhere but no... Typical! I'll keep looking!

something tells me your engine would not be running right if this was so...

180 degrees out is a common thing with rebuilds , just means you have to put the plug leads 180deg out on the cap to correspond.

Interested in the thermometer readings. I've got a non contact thermometer and I'm trying to check if my engine is warming up OK. My dash guage is working, but seems to register 1/3 at normal running.
I'll compare yours to mine.

Tony - glad they were of use to you. They were taken after a run. Sitting at protracted idle, the rad got to 60 I think, but we didn't do any engine readings. Needle at time of readings was just over half, and was thought to be possibly reading a little high. All the way home it hovvered around the halfway mark.

Mark - yep shims, or I think, shim. You wouldn't believe how quickly that drive came out once the fuel pump and needle and long bit of plastic was out.... Check the two studs underneath the dizzy....you could see where mine have been "chipped" or worn. Dunno what the drive looked like as the two Micks were busy oggling it!!!

Note: Please, if you are using the temps as a guide, please do not treat them as gospel. I am going on memory, and cited them only to show the difference in temp accross the engine!

thrust washers 2 off suprisingly expensive things to protect the case, vw rebuilds came without the disidrive fitted and I bet peeps don't always transfer them over correctly, and lots of rebuilds from certain places seem to come 180 degrees out, which is a simple matter of care, if they can't get that right what's the rest of it likely to be like ?

can you post some pics of the shims? I am very interested to see this as I have never heard of shimming a distributor before
