Relay Races to kill my battery

Hello.

I've had a problem recetly where my battery seems to go flat very quickly, but only very rarely. Anyway, had a problem when I was away last weekend and got the AA out. Chap reckoned that something was draining the battery enormously. He eventually tracked it down to a possibly sticking relay in the engine bay. This relay sits in a black plastic fuse box on the passenger/nearside of the engine bay.

I think the relay that's in there is the one on this web page
http://www.ymchina.com/html/prd/jd141.htm

It's a VW relay. 12v, 40A. 171 906 383, R 601 389 are the numberson it.

Anyone know what this relay does and why that could be draining my battery dead in a matter of hours? Is it part of the original wiring or could it have been added when the van was converted? And any idea where I can get a new one?

It's an 86, 2litre petrol van.

Any help or advice would be great ta.

Duh. Water cooled.

I believe it's actually 1.9 litre, not really a 2l.

ETKA doesn't say anything other then Relay for that part. About £8, someone will know, does it feed the ECU when ignition turned on, or fuel pump - follow wires.

Aircooleds were made up until about Sept 82 - so even given that some new vehicles are not registered straight away there is very little chance that an 86 would be Aircooled! - mine was made June 82/reg Feb 83...
