Things not to do with Syncros No.1

Try bump-starting them in reverse.

Reverse is the same ratio as G-gear. This provides a massive torque multiplication factor and will quite possibly tear your gearbox apart.

Please, just don't do it.

Pictures to follow.

Oops! An old syncro Gotcha - have now put this in 'Introduction to Syncros' on Tech Pages for all to see. Has been mentioned in passing quite often here, but now we have Wiki and Tech Pages, will try to make it prominent.

Thanks for raising this again, a lot of new Syncro owners out there and those boxes are starting to get in very short supply. (Maybe RJES will look into casting a few nice new reinforced casings!)

This isn't necessarily intuitive either. If your brain catches on you probably wouldn't try and bump it in G but reverse can sometimes seem like the only option (if your facing up hill). I've bump started several 2wd cars in reveres because turning it round seems too much of a fag, with a three ton van it's even more of a pain to reorient it for nose down the hill attitude.

the gear box got broken due to the emotions of seeing a 34 yer old woman you have spent 15 years with in tears

desparation leads to mistakes

Matt - a good percentage of Syncro owners could, and would, make the same mistake. It could have all been brushed under the carpet, but then when Bob, or Euan, or someone else made the same split second error of judgement, I'd have felt awful for one......

Felt the same when I posted about setting fire to the van - one persons error can be a hundred more folks gain.....

Yes, I don't think VW broadcast this, it was obviously discovered by many doing the same thing and someone saying 'Ah! I wonder if those bits underneath and bumping it in reverse last night are connected?' Of such things we learn...

Well sorted everyone, and hopefully a smiling Jen again...

Oooh ouch, now that is broken! Hope you can make something out of the bits of that and mine Thomas, although mine did go in the same place.
