Moving a van with the rear wheels locked?

You may have seen my other post (http://forum.club8090.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=44780) but basically my van has ended up broken down with the rear wheels locked in a bad position on my parents road. If I was able to manouver the vehical somehow so that it was better positioned then I could not worry about it and sort out the problem/solution in a more relaxed and organised way.

So any ideas how to shift it? I need to jack it up and put something under the wheels I imagine, or find someone who is able to get the thing out of gear so it can be pushed.

many thanks,
Martin

If you can disconnect the inboard (that is gearbox) end of one of the driveshafts, I think that should do the trick.

Look at this link for more details....... http://volksweb.relitech.com/cvjoints.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

You may have to undo both driveshafts if the differential is locked up by the (transmission?) problem you have.

NO, thats because of brakes sezised, this is gbox locked .

With one moving the gearlever and others rocking the van back and forth you might find a position where it unlocks, if so, then leave it in that position..

o/wise remove driveshaft(s) at inner and outer joints

Go jaks would do the trick. A decent tool hire company should have them or know where to get them.

It is much easier to remove a driveshaft and tow in normally...

Find out whether they are hex or 12-point set-screws.
Get the required bit and a socket set to drive it
Clean out each set-screw head with a scriber
Remove both inner and outer CVJs, remove the driveshaft
If diff is still locked up remove the other one

You will need to remove them anyway to subsequently remove the gearbox

Tow as normal !

hehe teach me to read the link then!
Actually one of my old Land Rovers got stuck in gear and needed a good shove back n forth from another Landy which released it so we could tow it to the shop for a new box. Jus an idea to try to try cause its freezin cold out there!!

@Yeah I had a Yugo do this on me many years ago (yes I use to drive a yugo lol) rocking the car back and forward freed it up enough to release the gear, that is of course providing yours in locked into gear, and not in netruel locked up.

Failing that if you have a drive way your trying to move the vehicle onto, and have recovery cover, ring up the recovery and they wil have dollys to move the van on.

OK so I managed it! Couldn't get it out of gear by shoving it around and don't have any tools at my parents, so...

By starting the van and bringing up the clutch it stalls and jumps forward, so I jumped it forward onto some bricks (took a few goes), then the tow man was able to slide his trucks lifting things (technical) under the rear wheels. Then he towed it the 5 metres so that it no longer blocks the cul-de-sac and put it down very neatly where I asked.

Now I just have to get the thing fixed but at least it is no longer in the way!

thanks for all the ideas though!

Too late this time but for future reference:
Just find a some sheets of thin meal - even a couple of baking dishes will do - and jack each wheel up in turn to place a dish under each tyre. You will be surprised how little force is required to slide each end of the vehicle.
Many years ago I drove a motorcycle combination to the garage with a meal wheeled roller skate under the sidecar wheel as someone had let the tyre down. Good job but it didn't go down well with my brother as his skate became afflicted with the dreaded "Windows" * which any half decent Old Person will know about.
(* = rectangular holes in the metal tyre due to excessive wear)
