I have just brought a new distributor kit with leads, sparks and a coil:http://www.justkampers.com/shop/type_25 ... e-kit.html and just kampers explained to me that there would be a wiring modification that included disconecting the TCI unit and the other white box nex to it becuase the 009 distributor had all that stuff built in.

But i have slightly forgotton the details so if anyone could help me here it would be much appreciated, i am a total newbie when it comes to T25s

I fear that '009' has gained conotations of '007' and some sooper dooper dizzy that will improve performance. Unfortunately 009's don't suit T25s very well at all and I never liked them even on beetles. Perhaps someone can help you out here but a standard dizzy, even second hand is a lot simpler and more suited to the job.

Well I only brought it becuase my van will not start and have already replaced the coil. Just thought that by replacing the whole lot it might actually start

Your standard dizzy need next to zero maintainance.
a 009 will need the points setting every 3 thousand miles, and replacing evey 6.

It has no vacuum advance, and vacuum advance is an economy measure allowing you to run more advance at part throttle.
The advance curve isn't suited to the engine.

Electronic ignition vehicles run somewhere around 50000v, the 009 around half that, so you also would now have a weaker spark, making starting more difficult

I don't know why they sell those as they are meant for type 1 engines.

Just kampers dont seem to sell normal standard dizzys, only 009's

Where would one get a new dizzy for a t25 1982 2ltr Aircooled then?

Are you positive the original dizzy is no good?

Tip from years of working on engines over many years:

If a capful of meths down the intake doesn't encourage the engine to fire, then its spark thats the problem or something mechanical amiss. If it does fire, chances are its fuel related. It might seem a rather crude way to diagnose but its saved me hours of twiddling by being able to ascertain whether I go down the fuel or spark chain to find the problem. If you fit the 009 you could well make tracing the problem even harder and to set it up properly you need the engine running anyway.

Not trying to put a dampener on you honestly but trying to save you further grief. Unless you know for sure whether the problem is fuel or spark, you could be chasing your own tail here. And Simon is quite right the 009 is definately not suited to a T25 - its not keen on the crude approach to spark advance which a 009 is. These places supply the 009 because thats all there is new, but it doesn't mean its a good replacement or that it should even be fitted.

If you haven't removed original, I'd try to attack this AA style. Others will give you pointers to diagnosing the problem. Could be something as simple as a failed electronic unit in which case a swap with a known good one will make that obvious.

Oh its definatly the spark and we fitted a new coil but that hasnt helped

See if you're getting a fat spark from the coil itself first - thick gloves and move thick central cable from coil to earth to see if its putting out anything.

Just found a dizzy on megabug, wasnt cheap I just hope it was what was wrong with the dam thing

Does the 009 not suit all t25's? just wondering as I was half thinking of getting one for my 1776 CT engine

now butting out!.....

the 009 will have points , the original t25 set up wont , therefore the coil will be wrong for the ignition system!



double check the earth on the engine/chassis for the ignition circuit , clean it and check it as this can lead to no spark!

as said above keep the original design parts they are designed for there job and will do it well!

Best move ever was robbing a scrapper from volks heaven.

Couldn't get above 3.5k revs with the old one

my old Aircooled, now in VW heaven, came with a 009. No end of starting, running and power problems. Advised to replace with standard....got a second hand unit. It wasn't miraculous (other issues beside), but it made it much better for 2 years!

Put an add on wanted....speak to a breakers etc....

You don't need a new dizzy, if it doesn't work the repair kit will fix it.
