oil in Bell housing couple of questions

When I removed the engine I noticed there is a small amount of oil on the bell housing, it doesn't smell like gearbox oil. So I'm hoping its the crank seal.
I've not investigated that far yet, as I was only trying to do the gasket between the heat exchanger and the head, which resulted me in removing the engine.
So whilst its out I want to try and resolve the oil leaks. I have a lot of oil on the top of the engine and on top of the engine cover, which then seems to leak down through the drivers side of the engine. I'd assume if my crack seal had gone then it could be this being chucked around, however there doesnlt seem to be any oil on the outside face of the flywheel gearbox side.
Pic may or may not help

Could this oil in the bell housing be gearbox oil eventhough it smells like normal oil? if so whats the likely culprit?
Do the oil seals at the fan end often leak?
Thanks
Andrew
