Hi,

I am looking for a little bit of advice. After a few months searching I am about to take a look at a very promising T25 camper (Thursday night)..

As it is my first camper, does anyone have any more advice as to what to look out for and watch out for etc..

Look through Wiki at the New / Prospective Owners section as I wish I'd known about 80-90 before I bought our first T25 camper a year ago

I was really lucky in finding a decent one off flea-bay but some of the common problems were still there in the early stages so, as they say, go for a really solid body / chassis as the rest is (relatively!) easy to sort (a good sign with ours was a fresh 12 month MoT)

I'd also get the current owner to walk you through the camping equipment (hob, fridge, heating if fitted etc) to make sure it all works and if it smells damp / musty find out why!

Thanks for the great info... I was also wondering about road tax, basically how much is it and is it affected by this £400 road tax I keep hearing about... the van in question is a westy 88 1.6TD...

I've just had tax renewal reminder through and 12 months PLG 185. I think what you may be referring to, are vehicles registered after 2001 where tax is based on fuel type and registered emissions.

So. (and i will be corrected if I'm wrong)

PLG registered pre 2001 engine size over 1549 12mths = 185/6mths = 101.75

Post 2001 Co2 emission 101-120 grams per KM = 35

121-150g/km 120/66
151-165g/km 145/80
166-185g/km 170/94
over 185/g/km 210/120

Vehicles registered after 2006 over 225g/km 400/220

So the tax hits are for newer vehicles that still pack a CO2 punch despite technology.

There are other rates for alternative fuels

We've got an 89 Westy California, just been taxed in sept was £185/12 months. Insurance just over £300 for both of us, although the other half doesn't like driving it (lhd). what model westy are lookin at?

Vehicle in question is a standard california with eberspacher etc...

Good choice in camper, only thing that didn't work on ours was the eber. Hope its a good un mate

also if your gonna buy one you will need,and this is a must,the biggest tub of swarfega you can find

Hi all,

Well I got up early today and visited the van (Had to delay the first visit).

I was most impressed with it, in particular the speed of it ... wasnt expecting it to be so nippy to be honest.

My only reservation is 1st gear... I found it a bit difficult to put it into gear? Now I am not sure if thats me, especially with it being a LHD, or there is a owners "knack" to it or what to be honest...

Any advice?

To be honest, for the first few times drivin ours i found the gearbox bit of a nightmare, not just because of the dog leg set up(used to drive old merc van with same gearbox). I put it down to being lhd and not being used to using right hand for changing gear. You'll get used to it pretty quick, absolutly love drivin and being away in it now, would sell the daily drive before the van any day.
