First off, xmas greetings all,I am stupid and really in the S+~#,while warming my 1.6 diesel, engine running, thought l would check on engine opened engine bay lid tiny drop of oil on rocker cover,I lent over with a rag to wipe it off, must just say I don't have a timing belt cover fitted and yes it grabbed the rag it whacked into tensioner and stalled the engine, thought I had got away with it no such luck turned engine over just clouds of smoke timing was all over the place,I thought it may be just the timing jumped, put it in the garage and the chap says he has reset the timing and it's just the same,is the pump dead and if so new pump or engine,ps xmas round the corner i'm rightly in the crap, cheers all,pps anyone selling pump or engine.

A 1Y engine is ideal for you if you have a 1.6d (non turbo). Do a search

Leaving an exposed cam belt is just asking for trouble...even if this hadn't have happened it was only a matter of time before a stone or other bit of crap had got caught up and ripped the belt. I feel for you matey.

No cover at all will not catch the big things, but even with a cover on, a stone can get in rip and up a belt, did it to my Golf MKIV daily driver, luckily... I was going slowly and it didn't knacker the head. Even the VW dealer garage couldn't believe it.
If its going to happen it will !

Its not just stones you've got to worry about, my 205GTi engine lunched itself back in March after the dizzy disintegrated and jammed the camshaft whilst driving along

Why hasn't anyone mentioned ice and snow build up. I used to run my CF's without a cover as they always distorted and rubbed on the belt. I was warming it up one snowy day with the bonnet up and I noticed a slow but progressive build up of ice in the pulley slots. Fair frit me to death! Then I thought about small stones and gravel...
Cheers

And now I am thinking about my WBX!
