Got a very intermittent noise from what sounds like the rear near side wheel. Sounds like a knock that happens every revolution of the wheel. Thought it might be something jammed between backplate and drum. Took wheels off, replaced shoes, checked bearings cv etc and seemed ok. Put everything back and no noise. Now noise coming back; but can go for days without knock and then it comes back?? Any ideas?

Far more likely to be CV joints. Pump some grease into them and check security of bolts

Ive also got a similar knocking noise on the same side. Yet to investigate fully but:

If I pull the offside driveshaft in and out is seems ok

If I pull the nearside driveshaft in and out, when I pull it out from the gearbox end towards the wheel it sounds like its hitting the back of the wheel bearing/housing, It makes a distinctive metalic like knock whereas the offside does not.

Mine did that. Dry on grease. Repack em' and it shuts em' up. If they're unservicable then replace joints but often a strip down, clean, and repack is enough.

Wish I'd never answered this - now MINE has started. Clonked for a good mile before a sharp bend and then it stopped. Typical - yukky weather now too.

Back plate can be a little out of line and a high spot on the back of the drum lip can hit it every time round.
Try looking for the point of contact on back plate and adjusting carefully with a hammer.

Mine been doing it for 1000 miles ! Both CV joints replaced and a good fettle by CJ and still its there. I will wait till it goes bang and find out what it was.

As an old motorist remarked to me today, areas like this would have had proper grease nipples but we're in the 'sealed for life' era now - life being 7 years on average I gather.

I wonder if new joints are worth drilling into and fitting grease nipples. I've just shut mine up for the winter by making a small hole in the rubber bellows and pumped black grease in using a grease gun then squeezed the bellows to push grease into the joint - shut them up until Spring and avoid the messy strip down needed...

I must admit, I always keep a spare shaft with joints fitted, all greased up and ready to go but my enthusiasm for this kind of work past September is gone these days.

Read the Haynes and it appears you have to remove the drive shafts and MUST use a VW named grease. Is there an easier/quicker way and is VW grease needed?

All the CV kits that I've seen come with a pack of grease, I don't think VW grease is necessary.
