Is painting a technical question?

My 1982 is suffering from wet ceiling syndrome... can't find any obvious cracks or anything, and was wondering if these old pop top plastic rooves suffered from... seepage? Could I paint it to waterproof it? It is scabby and green on the top anyway, so I want to paint it, but would that solve the damp ceilling issue do you think?

Plus WHAT do you paint it with pvu based paint or what?

Thanks!

Hello
There will no doubt be many suggestions ranging from the very sensible to the "snake oil" solutions. But first be sure you are not just suffering condensation!

Condensation...

Possibly - the ceilling is brown sort of woodchip stuff, perhaps even asbestos? I presume at some time it was covered in vinyl, long since peeled away... It isn't 'wet' and dripping, but damp enough in many places to glisten on your hand... plus it leaves your hand slightly sticky - I suppose it could be condensation.

Need to breath in the van less ha ha.
