(87 1.6 diesel) Guage does not seem to move up any, when i put in key it flashes(red light) for a while then stops. Was out for a good 60 minute run today and it did not appear to move at all.

fluids all ok, engine does not appear to be overly hot or anything.

Could it be faulty or is it just keeping temp down efficiently??

the red light will flash if your overheating, it flashes when you start up and then goes out, it will only illuminate if you have a problem, change your temp sender switch and see if the guage works...

Find the gauge sender, (black 2 pin sensor on thermostat housing) put the igntion on and then earth out the wires use a split pin to join the two together and gauge should go fully up. If it does then faulty sensor, if gauge does not move then you have a problem with the wiring or gauge on dash. Hope this helps.
