before i go off and start to collect/scavenge some parts for a GTI swap, would the diesel bellhousing and input shaft etc fit my Aircooled gearbox ok??

Yes but don't forget to fit a spigot bearing into the end of the crank on the GTi engine

And either cut down the input shaft, or fit a diesel one as they're about 15-20mm shorter....
