Hi guys, this is probably going to seem like a stupid question, but are there different exhaust system for a 2.1 petrol?

I have a 1989 2.1 multivan, lhd manual from Germany. I have been looking around at exhausts and mine looks slightly different to the one on the JustKampers website?

I looked on Wiki and found two differnt engines. How do you tell which one you have? Sorry to ask such a simple question, but i am just unsure?

2.1 L (2100cc) (90bhp) (Serial # SS) 9:1 compression ratio Wasserboxer
2.1 L (2100cc) (112bhp) (Serial # DJ) 10:1 compression ratio, Digijet injection, only sold in European countries not requiring catalytic converter.

The difference is that the DJ has no lambda probe boss. The engine number is on the rear face of the engine directly below the black breather tower ... it'll be prefixed DJ***** or SS***** of even MV*******

Yours will more than likely be a 2.1MV engine fitted with a catalytic convertor.

The rear silencer and cat are the only difference to the DJ exhaust.

It is possible to fit the 2.1DJ exhaust and get rid of the "cat" as it's not needed in the UK.

www.brickwerks.co.uk can supply you with the cat by-pass pipe including a welded in boss to accept your existing Lambda sensor in order to fit the DJ rear silencer.Or a complete stainless exhaust.

Otherwise you could try ordering the MV exhaust from VW...if it's still available?
VW do list a cat by-pass pipe but not sure if that's available either.

Brilliant thanks for the advice guys! Yep my exhaust is the one with a CAT in it! I thought there was a pipe going up from the CAT back to the engine on mine though?> I might be mistaken though! i think im going to go and have a look just to make sure!

Wicked thanks for the link. I have joined that website, that is the exhaust system i have on mine, with the CAT at the rear just before the silencer! Think i am definately going to have to remove the CAT, they are expensive!

Hi I have a German import 1990 Westy which had the cat exhaust fitted to it (think mine was an SS engine code). I bought a JK exhaust which got rid of the cat & the garage who fitted it just had to cut a small hole in the new exhaust and re-weld the Lamder senser (? spelling) into it. New exhaust has been on for 6 months or so and it runs fine. I think a full JK system is £240 and if you can get a VW cat system it is about £750 so doing it this way is also quite a saving.

Ok cool, thank you. How much did the garage charge you to fit the system so i have a rough idea?

I think they charged about £180 which I thought was ok until the receipt came through & I saw that several studs had snapped & they had sorted them as well, which made me think it was a good price.

i think that is a very good price if the studs had snapped i wont to put a new one on mine, iv had my new one for some time but every time i ask them they pooh them self, becouse of the studs sanpping, and iv got to say mine studs do look ok,iv had a good look at them,and iv been luck like that every think so far been easy taking off,im going to have to look in to it again, and get it done befor it to hard to do,just got to make sure they no what could happen then i wont get a big bill back

Wow, yep that is a good price! Wasn't a garage anywhere near Berkshire by any chance!? lol ! Ive got a feeling this job is realistically going to cost me £450! Lol its' twice what i paid for the van! But it will be worth it just to know it is done right i think! I was going to have a crack myself, but might leave it to the experts!
