Just spent the best part of four days ( had to watch Gloucester play on Friday night and the Wales v All Blacks on Saturday) to change the gearbox in my T4 Syncro van.
Admittedly I did bump along the bottom of the learning curve for quite a while even so it's not a job I would want to repeat on a regular basis.

I'm told even the alternator belt is a s.o.d. but maybe that's the T5
I do hope you do not have to do it again, ever Doug

I remember being told by a local VW guy VW made a compromise of serviceing ease in favour of power when squeasing a transverse 5pot in the transporter; add the normal syncro "not as simple as it usally is" factor I can imagine you pain Doug!

Hi Ian
It has been worrying me a bit, well actually a lot, however it wasn't too bad as I reconnected the downpipe with the engine/gearbox half in (I could get both hands to it) then sort of tilted it up as it went in further until the down pipe was over the steering rack.
Seems to be OK but I imagine it to be an absolute nightmare with engine in situ - I suppose VW have a special tool!
