There was a bright green spherical thingy like that on a 1981 Jetta that I owned many years ago. It was something to do with ensuring that if you were driving uphill/on the level/downhill the engine (1.5l carb) always got the correct amount of petrol.
Given that on Hercules van it's connected to the air box could it be equalising the air (pressure) to the engine under varying conditions?

Yup, just store a vacuum in it and put it away on a shelf for later, it'll still vac when uum want it to
But not needy on your wagen, its only
attached to the filter unit I expect, not connected into it?

Etka does not show a variation of the aitbox with the vacuum unit in this position.
How is it attached to the airbox?
Most probably a modification that someone has made.

Not many SS engines about, I think iirc it was for the swiss market, but have never seen one. Looks like a variation on the idle stabiliser, possibly to do with emissions.

Prob to do with emissions, remove and store it...

I have it on mine too - 2.1 SS. I'll take a piccy when I get back to UK. It's definitely not a gash mod!
