Hope this is not a silly question but are you pulling out the cold start/chokey thing that apparently advances the timing and or richens the mixture ?? Don,t think the push button on your dash is standard and I think it is OK as long as it heats the hot plugs via a relay as some I have seen have high current cables right upto the dash.........not good practice.

I am not an authority on this, just another one time cold start refugee ! Two things assist cold start one being heater plugs and this alone was not much help. Then someone on this forum pointed out "the chokey thing" I was expecting to find a knob to pull but then as if by magic there it was, just in front of my left knee 3" X 2" square...........how did I miss it ? Mine just will not start without it, even when hot it fires up quicker. Mine is an 87 1.7 and I dont know if they were fitted to all diesels but there again if yours was previously a petrol I would have thought that what used to be a choke cable would have been hooked up to the advance mech on the pump. Take a look under the rocker box side of the pump..is there an arm there not hooked up to anything ? If there is how about tying it forward and see if it works.
Good luck in your search.
