Have seen it in Halfords - does it work, are there any cheaper alternatives (£12.99 for 2l), how much will I need, will to much salt on the road give my van a heart attack?

I have always found that Hammerite (on its own) chips easily when applied to areas that get a lot of water and stone chips thrown at them. Paint and underbody sealant is my choice.

I agree, once chipped, rhe water will spread behind. :(

Clear wax oil is my choice, you can see whats going on behind it then.

Yes this is quite true on clean metal however I find that on pre-rusted metal Hamerite (not smoothright with seems to be an entirely different composition) will soak in and stick like the proverbial without forming a seperate layer effect such as found in plastic coating, which will peel back under the effect of creeping rust. I speak as a lifetime reclaimer of pre-owned vehicles due to an accident at birth (Poor parents).
 Cheers

Hi

hamarite underbody sheild contains waxoyl. Full spec is on

http://www.hammerite-automotive.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Rust Proofing > Underseal

Use my van every day come rain or shine and never had any issues with Hammerite, I use the spray lance for the tricky bits then cover every thing with the brush on stuff.
