Diff Lock

Hi guys, it's been a while since I have been on here. With the help of Roger on here I have got involved with a couple of local 4x4 clubs, and have got the 'bug' even more! (Luckily the 4x4 guys don't mind me in my 2WD.)

I'm looking into ways I can improve my 2WD (without going 4WD!) and a diff lock like some of you guys have would be very useful. So to my question, can a diff lock for a Syncro be fitted to a 2WD Type 25 gearbox?

If you have any links to good information on Syncro diff locks, or to websites selling parts I would be very greatful. Thanks.

There are two ways to answer that question

1. Yes fit a Syncro box instead of your 2WD one and get the necessary gubbins to operate the locker. Syncrospares, Syncronutz or Aidan Talbot

2. Get a limo from Go Westy

This will help your 'off roadability' quite a bit but as any Syncro driver who has had to take their prop off will tell you, you wont have the capability of 4WD or anything like it. Great for muddy fields.

For my Baja, or a Buggy I'm thinking about building.

BTW I'm not wanting to deprive you guys of a Syncro gearbox. I'm wondering if a 2WD gearbox from a T3 (which wouldn't interest you guys) could be modified to have a diff lock. There has to be some commonality between the 2WD and the 4WD gearbox, and if I could get hold of the diff lock parts and convert a 2WD gearbox I'd be very happy.

Speak to Aidan (link in the bottom of this post)

But if its going in the baja then the T25 box is a different kettle of fish.... will be a good bit of work to make it fit.. you may want to consder fitting a Quaife limited slip diff or Pelloquin "torsen" type diff to the beetle box..

Aiden (Beaker) has just fitted a difflock to a standard (2wd) box for me,
its destined for a 63 split, however the length of the gearbox may foul your rear torsion tube & this may mean that you have to bring the nose of the gearbox under the tube ,this may result in ground clearance issues on a baja - also you must leave a clear run for the selector shaft which runs from the bottom of the gearshift to the side of the gearbox. - Still its worth a go!

Thanks guys that is all very useful. I'll follow up all those leads. :D

BTW type 25 gearbox into a type 1 = not a problem. ;) Have helped a friend do this to his Trekker when he went to Subaru power, and know of many other conversions that have used this gearbox too.

I think the only limitation might be how deep my pockets are!
