Gearlever versus radio

Hi,
Fitted a new radio/cd player in the van and everything seemed ok.
Put it in for some welding whilst I went away for a week and when I came back I noticed everytime I changed in to the gears towards the radio I bashed against it. Now, I didn't notice this before so what's happened? I'm sick of changing channel!! I'm confused by this as I'm sure the distance between the old one and new one must only be a couple of mm's and there was no problem before.
Any advice gratefully received.
Cheers

Bent gearstick.
Very, very common.

Sounds like the gear lever could be a bit sloppy, my one goes no where near the dash at all. I had fitted a new radio recently to mine as well.

Did the welding involve dismantling/disconnecting the gear linkage?
You can move the gearlever backwards/forwards by loosening the clamp on the sliding joint in the linkage just behind the fuel tank and sliding the joint - more spines showing = gear lever futher away from dash and radio.

like Mr Baxter says.........
heavey handed welder moving the van........ wouldnt go into gear so he pushed harder..... dont tempted to just put your foot against it and bend it back, they are weak, hollow tubes, further weakened by the set screw in the top of the spring retainer...
take it out and do it properly, if you cant adjust it out with the foot plate

When we got our van the gear stick had been snapped off and welded back on but it had been welded on upside down so to speak. 1st was often a little embarrassing as it inevitably involved unnecessary contact with the passengers leg

Eventually it started to get worse before breaking off completely - that was an annoying drive home I can tell you. Now it's replaced my left shoulder no longer suffers the pain it once did

I have the same problem - when i select 4th it often pops the facia off my radio. Although for some reason it happens more when the missus' has got Take That on! Cant figure it out!!!!
Thanks for the tip campervanman.

Bonus, I'd say!
