Hope you can give me some advice. Oil light and buzzer are on - checked oil level and its 3/4 full. Is this just a faulty sensor somewhere or should I prepare Mrs Niamhsdad for not getting any xmas presents this year?
Any thoughts gratefully received.
Oh, it's a 1986 Transporter.

More info please Engine size? Petrol Diesle?
The oil buzzer should only sound if you have low oil pressure over 2000 rpm.

Check the wire to the high presure switch, if it comes off things get noisy!

You have a vintage VW OF COURSE you should prepare Mrs Niamhsdad for not getting any xmas presents ... full stop.
As has been said has anything changed recently (bar the sound effects) and what engine is it ?
If it's a DG/DJ does the engine rattle ? Are the tappets still charged ... these won't prime if the pressure's really down.

Oiy idiot !

... is it rattling or what ? PS the high pressure sensor's down near the waterpump and the wires a brown one (there's 2 that go from near the front left to 2 pressure switches the rearmost is the 'buzzer of doom'.

Similar problem, started the other day after working around the front of the engine - but I know it's the high-pressure switch. Well, the wire at least, as I've found it floating around unconnected to anything. Trouble is, I can't find the switch to connect it back up! I understand it's on the rear face of the engine, somewhere near the oil pump (according to Haynes) or the water pump (as Ian says above) but I'm buggered if I can find it! To confuse the issue, the wire leaves the connector block at the front left of the engine and is threaded across the top of the engine to the front right - and doesn't appear long enough to reach the rear. Yes, the spade connector is still on the end of it...!

How about this for help to find the switch (poss one of two) info in second pic as to location of second if fitted rear of engine below oil pump

high pressure switch is just infront of the alternator/waterpump drive belt just to the left of the pulley down in the darkness. The connection needs to be a flag type spade connector (ie right angle) and ideally the cable is cable tied to the switch after fitting, as it was in the factory.
If it's not clipped it can come off, and says the engine has been out/swapped or someone has had probs and been fiddling as the original cable tie is pretty secure in the groove in the switch body.

Engine been out or work done underneath?
Dash been apart??
if no to above...
Does it rattle much?
Does it only come on once up to temperature? or all the time?

Ah - found it! The engine's a recon - not that long ago, by the looks of it. At a guess, I'd say they gave up trying to fit the wire to the high-pressure oil sensor having found a spare wire after installing everything else, and just tucked it out of the way. I probably disturbed it while trying to check the reversing light wiring, and it was occasionally earthing on something - giving the buzzer of doom. It's now reconnected where it should be (I can understand why they gave up!), and all is well - at least in that department. Just the rear washer, heated rear window, central locking, battery discharging and headlamp levelling system to go...
