sliding door lock mechanism

I've got a buggered sliding door lock mechanism,
march 1984 caravelle, twin slider, off-side door.
I shut my door and it didn't latch, I tried it a few more times and it eventually went but wouldn't lock.
the internal door lock knob was stuck in the locked position, even though it was not locked, the key wouldn't work either.
stripped it off and it has a Part number 253843654
it looks just like this

after a lot of fiddling I got it loosened up, it seems that when I turn the inner door handle anti clockwise the bit attached to the release cable moves forward, on mine it is catching on the internal part attached to the door lock knob and I don't think that is supposed to happen. The internal part attached to the door lock knob seems loose and worn.
at the moment I have managed to get my door closed and locked by holding the door lock knob up whilst shutting the door and then locking as normal, I don't want to use the door in case I can't close it again.
anyone had this before?
is mine an old or new type door?
anyone know where to get a replacement?
I found this but it seems steep, and it looks a bit different, with a "d" on the end of the part number
