As stated in other thread my exhaust leaking. I am trying to get my head around the varying examples of exhaust for watercooled T25 models. The link below is from Just Kampers and states system from 1983-1985. However is that a heat exchanger on the right side. If mine is Watercooled why would it have a heat exchanger.

If I was going to go Stainless could I get rid of this?

its not really a heat exchanger in the way i think you are thinking it is, as in Aircooled heating....... its there to send exhaust warmed air to the air intake, and isnt needed in this country, and infact only the early system has it, you dont need it.

they rust to bits in couple of years anyway, and rattle and fall off.......

Ah OK many thanks.

Looking to go stainless. A custom exhaust place says they can make one up, but they say a nightmare (lots of piping). Though looking at JK site. I think the custom place are referring to the later T25 ones.

The early system seems far more straight forward.

yes its simpler, but it also just"hangs" on the head studs, and therefore the heads, and this is beleived to not help the water jacket seals last as long as they should do.The later one also possibly allows more power.

do a search on stainless steel systems in the search system, there is a fair bit about it been said, and infact there is thread about one being fitted this past weekend in general chat

I can believe that. My early DG has an Empi Aircooled-style exhaust which is bloody heavy and I was surprised that there were no secondary mounting brackets.

The garage say it's just the silencer and exit pipe that needs to be replaced, not the whole system. I suppose this is the part I require.

That's the correct exhaust for your van. As you can see it's the same back box/tail pipe on a 1.9 DG as on a 2.0l CU air-cooled.
