Dash mount choke type pull knob. activates a pump, which?

Hi,

My Belgium LHD 16" LPG'd Syncro Caravelle as an aftermarket (I think) choke type pull knob on the dash which glows green when pulled - very Halloween

I didn't think it did anything, apart from light up when the ignition is on and its pulled, until I was in a very quiet lockup and tried it. I can hear a faint electrical pump type noise coming from the underside of the engine.

Haven't got around to tracing wires yet. The engine doesnt seem to change tone when its pulled, whether on petrol or LPG.

I'll take a photo of the lit knob at lunchtime.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

cheers
Patrick.

It's probably nothing to do with a choke...

If its in the centre of the dash, with a wee diagram on the panel, it's one of the diff-lcok knobs, if there's only one then that's the rear...

The sound you're hearing is a leaky vaccum one-way valve or split tube, go under when its making that sound and listen near to the two spherical vacuum accumulators under there...

Don't drive it on tarmac with that knob pulled out...

If the knob is just next to the steering column, then that'might' be a 'cold-start' device if it's a diesel...

Take a photo, and if I'm right you'd do well to first read our website about the Syncro, anything descriptive in there.. and the Wiki too

Not got photos yet - got carried away with replacing straps securing my LPG tank to comply with UK requirements.

Thanks for your comments HarryMann.

I know its not a choke, it just looks like one.

I have both diff locks and both pull switches in the usual place, so unless one doesnt work and has been supplemented by the pull switch, it aint one of those.

As I wrote earlier, its an LPG'd petrol van.

cheers
Patrick.

Here's the piccy.

The mysterious green pull switch is below the heater controls.

The dial to the right of it is the LPG tank gauge and to the right of that are both diff lock pull switches with the LPG/petrol switch in the middle, where the decoupler switch usually goes.

Any ideas?

cheers
Patrick.

To be honest if its an aftermarket switch it could do anything or nothing, well or badly! If it makes a noise that'll help locate it better, I'd try and find it before it breaks and stops being noisy.

Any idea what the vans history is? Being an import has it come from somewhere cold like Sweeden? Could be some weard and cunning little heatery pumping thing to make it start and run toasty in minus 40?

that looks like the pull nob i had in my old split it used to be for an eberspacher heater. pull it out and it glows green but my heater never worked so removed it but kept the nob cause it looked nice.
