1.9dg Starter motor just started playing up.Motor fires for starting and then appears to jam(whirring sound).Tap it a few times and it seems to free its self, turn key and away we go.
Is this a sign that the starter motor is kfunked and needs replacing? I'm guessing so but need convincing for sure, wots the best place to get one from if i do,GSF?
:(

sounds to me like it needs a good cleaning and looking at.
It may just be crud stopping it spiinijng out properly......mine did exactly as you describe, and i took it off and cleaned it all up, re lubricated it and it hasnt been any bother since.......

Check out my dealings with my starter.. https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=42320
Dont think its the same prob but i know where i would and wouldnt buy a new starter from now.
Check all electrical connections and also take it off and check theres no obvious signs of bits of metal in the hole where it sits. Clean everything! Sometimes bits break off or fall into the inspection hole (where u check tdc mark) and can rattle around and cause probs (like a small nut or bolt)
If you needd to get it checked out internally then personally id take it to someone who knows what there doing if your unsure.
Good luck.

had motor off and cleaned/lubed and cleaned up all electric conections and still got same probs,so am sure new is required.
Question is where to get one from around Derby? GSF down the road but not convinced its the best place to get it from.Whats other people's thought's about getting one from there...(could do with one sooner rather than later-daily driver.)
Thanx all... :)

GSF at derby is very good, and stand by the warrentry too, but they will want your old one in exchange......

Nottingham VW also good but a bit far from you i guess, last i heard they had moved to Saxondale area, but i maybe out of date a bit

I got a new one from gsf during the "summer", it's a bosch, with 80-90 gsf discount. Had no problems with it to date.
