Friends van's got a knocking noise from front offside wheel. He thinks it may be bearing.
Is replacing the front wheel bearings a DIY job or do they need a press ?

Personally I'd be wanting to identify the exact area the noise is coming from as there are a few bits around the front suspension that will need checking besides the wheel bearings, such as ball joints / anti roll bar link and bushes /shocker mounts etc, etc

But answer your question, Yes it is possible to fit a wheel bearing as a DIY job, provided you have a Good workshop manual, a good selection of tools and the confidence to tackle the task.

Thanks Fritz. Told him similar but he seems convinced it's bearings. I'll try and persuade him to do a thorough check first. Thanks again. :D

Wheel bearings don't make a knocking noise....needs investigating...more likely an antiroll bar link broken or other suspension component wear...bottom ball joint, shock absorber etc

Nope, wheel bearings hum, drone whine and moan..

Anyway, you can quickly prove him w rong by jacking the thing up and testing for wheel bearing play both in horz and vert planes, rock it man!

If it only rocks in one plane unlikely to be wheel bearing...

If the knocking is coming from what appears to be under the seat, it's possibly an upper suspension bush. Not a DIY job really as they need welding in.
