Over reving and knocking

I have a 1.7 diesel and this morning on the way to work i heard a loud knocking from the engine.

When I stopped and lifted the engine hatch i could hear a hissing but no steam. Oil ok, water ok, temp ok.

When i rev the engine the knocking comes back and it over revs for about 5 secs and then goes back to idle.......any ideas what it might be?

Many thanks
Desparate from Portsmouth :(

could be a vacume pipe, check the one that goes to the brake servo, it will affect the timing i think, but i dont "do" diesels, so might be wrong.....

Well it sounds like the problem I has last week. Which turned out to be very low oil making my tappets bang away. Not only that but it would over rev like yours. So it could be oil stravation of some sort.
