After being let down my garage i thought i would have a bash at putting in a new water pump. Looked at the Haynes manual and it looked OK.

I have taken the belt off and the fly wheel but am having difficulty in removing the coolant pipes, they have a alan-key type head, but i am having great difficulty in getting the leverage and the room to remove.

Can anyone help me please?? :D

Engine type? Presuming a WBX?

Are you trying to use allen keys, or a say a 1/4" or 3/8" socket set with extensions and hex bits?

Have you given them a good dosing of Plusgas or similar?

Clean them out thoroughly before tapping the hex bit into them well (like drivshaft/CVJ cap-heads..

A wee tweak in the tightening direction first sometimes helps..

You might also check the Wiki, Tools, Techniques and Sundries on looseing seized nuts and bolts... e.g. if all else fails, try the bolt punch idea

Good luck..

If it's the 2 that hold the steel pipe on a WBX then you may need a long series 6mm allen socket, then you can get at them from between the crank pulley and the flange and from behind the mudflap for the other one.

Ian, you are a star...thnks very much!!

Just looking at them on e-bay as I have to get that water pipe off as well.... its nicely rusting away, and I have been given a pretty much brand new part!

so spent afternoon pulling off pipes and wondering how to get the thermostat housing off, and that lovely water pipe.

Now.....what bolts do I put it back with....can I get any in stainless so they will be easier to remove in future?

Emm, you prob. won't ever have to remove them again but here are the part nos.

N 014 709 1 M8x22 (hex head) 2 off

N 090 709 1 M8x25Z3 (hex head(combi)) 2 off (pipe to thermostat)

If it's the heads that have corroded thn stainless may help (in many years); if its the fact they're seized in the pump casting, then I doubt it, if it matters then assemble stainless to alloy with this stuff...

Chromate jointing paste (Duralac/JC5A)

Clive,

I hope never to have to change them again.....but they go into the water pump....and as I have yet to change that beast.........

However, I do have insurance....as I have a new pump in the garage, and I have found the part for which I have an immediate spare never fails....

Will stick with the bolts I have, then, as they appear in reasonable nick. Will be applying wd40 or the like over the next few days to aid release!

don't like the sound of seized in pump casing.....

Personally, if you have a new one sitting there, and the gaskets etc., fit that and keep the other one as a spare, while you're at it??

you talk such sense........

but I have a question........it is a water pump for a 2.1 engine. This is good, as it is a 2.1. But my other two engines are 1.9 to 2.1 replacements. So I presumed that the pump was unbolted from one engine and bolted to the other. Having checked JK for prices....it appears that the pump they sell is for a 1.9..... how different are they???

i think Em, that they only sell one now, with a optional spigot for the oil cooler pipes on the 2.1 , as that is the only difference...... so , and i would be ringing them to check, it should be ok for both

ahhh mocki - thanks for that - my swapped 2.1s don't have the oil cooler, so the 1.9 pump will be fine. :D

So, the new pump could go on, and keep the old one as a spare, as it is no good for either of the other two engines. :D

Is this sommat we can tackle ourselves?
