Had one, sold it. The original VW ones are V. rare in the UK.

May seem a bit crackers, but after buying it and having to get a new latch part for it (was orderable from VW) I decided I didn't want to drill my van to fit it. Sold it to that Mike geezer from the south coast, he wanted it for his orange 16.

What I've done now, is use a Paulchen bike rack (v. strong) and make threaded mounting on that for the spare wheel. Works OK, but still to sort out extra support for the gas-struts.

The best range of this kind of stuff available now seems to be from Gary Lee in the US. However the costs of importing of his stuff to the UK may be prohibitive. BTW his rear rack is a direct copy of the Paulchen one.

Hmm,
Nice to eventually see some detailed pics of the original... but not great for those of us with the factory engine lid locker...

Can you get it for the other side? or is it just that side only?

Could we use this instead?
Used for mounting spare wheel on front of bay window, fixes with expanding bolts, couldn't it be used on the tail gate of the T25? Would put extra weight on tail, but then you could use the copper-pipe-cycle-carrier-trick so you don't up up with "Horzahead"

Also I saw this at blub freeze

mine is mounted on the left hand side in the rear, seams like a nut is welded on behind the trim, then a threaded bar screws in to it to hold the tyre in place, I understand this was an option (Aiden thought so) would be quite cheap to copy.

will consider this option but only if all else fails, not sure the threads would fit an alloy wheel on, whats the copper pipe trick?

To lock the tail gate open when weight on it is too much for the gas struts

would fit an alloy wheel on
could be extended to any length, with a bit of welding magic. May depend on how much your ET is different from bay wheel if left as stock. got to be worth it rather than the silly money those swing jobs go for, pretty inelegant design IMHO. You could in theory have two of these brackets on the tailgate for those with diectional tyres and 2 spare requirements. not sure if metal will take the weight of two wheels though.

probably easier to start from scratch, n make something that will take bolts from outside, think i will buy that welder ive had my eye on, just gotta stop misses from buying baby clothes
