Gearbox oil change

Hi Newbie here,

Been searching wiki etc before bugging you guys but nothing much there and nothing which helps in Haynes, so.......
Could someone tell me the basic method of changing the gearbox oil, I've got the oil from JK, I've got the time tomorrow, just need your expertise, hints, tips etc.

Jack it up safely so that box is level or preferably down at the drain plug end. Get a 17mm hex socket (or ad lib with a 17mm bolt/nut) and loosen/remove the filler plug before the drain plug or you might end up with an empty box and no way to fill it again. Fill plug is a bit awkward to access on some boxes due to proximity to shift mech. Remove drain plug and catch oil for safe disposal - examine magnet on drain for large and sinister bits of metal so you have something else to worry about. Replace plug - they are a taper thread so no washer needed. Refill with fresh oil till it reaches the fill hole, replace the fill plug and you're done!

as kieth says, very important to make sure you can get the filler out before you remove the drain :wink:

To make it easier to fill again, I'd suggest standing the new oil in a bucket of hot water whilst you're draining the old stuff out (especially now the weather is colder). Spending a few quid on a pump also speeds up the refilling process imho:

I use a length of garden hose (new) and feed it into the fill hole, thread the hose up and out of the engine bay, and then clamp it somehow. Place a funnel in the end of the hose (had to trim a bit from the spout to get a good fit, but the missus will never miss it from the kitchen cupboard!) Then fill at your leisure whilst sat in a garden chair. Takes ages, so I like the idea of heating the oil first as it is so thick. Place an old towel, or folded out carboard box on the ground underneath, and just watch for the dribble. This way makes it easier to fill whilst the van is stood level on the ground.
I store this hose by then stuffing the free hose end into the funnel mouth, to keep it clean, and hang it on the wall in the workshop. You only need about 5 foot of hose at the most, depending on where you attach it for filling.

I use the garden hose technique also, except i feed it out through the wheel arch. Horses for courses.

Warming the oil works a treat!
