5 speed box in a 1983 2.0 A/C?

Can I get a 5 speed box to fit my 2.0 A/C van with a CU engine. Present box is, I think, a DK. If so how much should I be looking at? I do less then a couple of thousand miles a year (may do more if this is a worthwhile proposition) so obviously need a cheap box or it won't be worth the effort. Having said that, will I actually gain in fuel economy? Just toying with the idea at the moment.
Thanks

Hi it will go in no problem, you will need to change the linkage too as its different to the early one but you can get away with it from the spline back, the biggest problem you will have is the 5 speed box is 54mm longer than the DK box, I reversed the mounting and remanufactured the length of it when I did one for a customer, it makes very little difference though as the 1st is the same ratio and 4th / 5th is the same or very close, its just split into 5 instead of 4, unless you are having problems with your gearbox then its one of those jobs that is a whim rather than practical.

My box is fine thank you!!!
Oh, sorry. Wrong forum.
Seriously: My gearbox is fine at the moment. I was just thinking of better economy and less "hammer" on the engine on long runs. I assume, as I do less than a couple of thousand miles a year, it's hardly worth changing to a 5 speed box then.
Thanks for reply.

depends on which box you fit , as different ratios . not all boxes are the same inside!
not going to be cost effective in the long run
if you have a 2.0l Aircooled box at the mo only an aap(2.1 petrol ) box will have better ratios(im 90% sure)
these boxes go for up to £500 , so not really worth it .
easier to put a pair of 15 inch mercedes wheels on the rear with 195 / 80 /15 tyres , this brings a standard 1.9 petrol box up to 2.1(aap) ratios!
this should be enough for you to at least try the idea!

Bigger wheels and tyres worth a try I suppose. Didn't think along these lines. I would, though, like to keep my original look! Suppose that's the price you have to pay! I have changed a lot on my van but tried to go along the lines of a "standard"conversion. (If you see what I mean).
You have certainly got me thinking now! Thanks for reply.

even if its for a few trips out , that way you can see the benifit from a gearbox change.
you can put mercs all round eventually either alloys or standard steels!
but easier to fit than a gearbox conversion!

billy739 and Steve 8090: Thanks for replies. I will now go to bed and have a sleepless night thinking about where I go next. Probably forget the idea!!
No I won't.
I may go down the bigger wheels route. That way I do not bastardize the van! I am into keeping things as original as possible. At least wheels can be changed back! Having said that, a few gearbox mods can be reverted to original!
And ..... I'm still unsure
