Intermittent 'ticking' on rear wheel or nearby.

Just appeared today....a kind of squeaky clunk from the nearside rear. not there all the time, in time with the speed of the vehicle but seems to disappear as speed increases (oor it gets too noisy to differentiate)
not there all of the time but most of the time.
Braking doesn't affect the noise as I thought it may be a worn shoe.
Could this be a CV joint or something else???

Have you checked your tyres for anything sticking in it.
I had this on the motorway some time ago started as a ticking noise that would end up feeling like you was driving on a rumble strip.
Have you been driving over loads of rough or steep roads as i was told by a VW mechanic that sometimes this causes the drive shafts to slip a little. Mine turned out to be the cv joints, i had all of them replaced and its been fine

Thanks for your response. Checked tyres. definately a 'squeak' increasing with speed. will check CV joints and brake drums.

Ours did this,it ticked at first then turned into a scraping noise. The metal ratchet piece on the brake shoe adjuster had fallen off and was catching in the drum. Eventually it worked it's way between the shoe and the drum.
Hope it's that simple for you too, Cheers,Ian.
ticking.

That sounds like the rear castellated nut isn't tightened up fully. I believe they are tightened up to one large bloke jumping /foot when camping in Cornwall (Cheers Steve), and don't forget to replace the split pin.
