My syncro 16" and a few questions

Hi all. I've finally got my 16" syncro to the uk. It's a camo finish ambulance,67K , with both lockers and no rust/dents. Factory Hi-roof has been removed and replaced with a large aero SCA roof and suitable reinforcing. Bit big for knarly off roading but intending to make it into a camper and I've also got a preloved grey westy interior to put into it in sometime the future.

It's got some sort of night heater in the engine bay and a load of electrics inbetween the front seats and on the bulkhead.

Anyway the conversion will have to wait, MOT and mechanics first. I haven't got a bentley manual yet.

  • I need to change the front pads, are these the same as a 14" bus?

The fan switch has the knob missing so I cannot turn the fan on. Does this part just push in or is it likely to be the whole switch that is broken. Anyone any idea where I can get one of these?

Difflocks have screw on knobs missing. Anyone any idea where I can get these and some other none syncro litlle bits I'm missing?

Oil warning led never comes on at startup.

Has any one played around with the night heaters, not even sure what it does or how to try and turn it on. Does it just pre-warm the coolant or does it somehow heat the vehicle via the small radiator in the rear of the vehicle?

Might be a lot more questions after the MOT. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I also forgot to say that the power steering belt is missing. It's a 2.1 DJ, is the part something I can get from a normal shop.

cheers

Hi, are you the guy who stopped for a chat afew months back when I was loading my van for a caving trip? And 5 years before that climbing basicly a sheet of ice in the snow in your old syncro (only to find the road blocked by crashed infereour rubish)? If so hello again, will have to wonder past and have a look. I've since moved house but not very far, so that partly explains why my van disapeared.

I think your brakes are different, maybe the same as an LT?

Heater switch just pushes on (if the switch aint broke) - theres someone local who broke a van, might have one, I'll try and find his number.

Difflock knobs I've been told are a parts bin job nicked off the beatle lines!

If you want a hand with things and a browse at Bentley (see what your about to go buy) give me a shout.

Oil warning led never comes on at startup.

I think you should investigate that as priority... the connections all the way through, might have been earthed.

CJ at Syncrospares will have some difflock knobs i expect, they do tend to strip their threads and come off but sometimes are glued back on.. have you checked they're not in the glovebox or door pocket?

Oh, and welcome to the (£££) madhouse :)

Hi Matt,

On mine I gutted the interior, removed everylast wire from the conversion and started again.

I have just got the night heater working, by installing a brand new one, as the army one had parts missing and the wiring is integral to the finnish conversion.

The webasto works by heating the water in the heater circuit, so pre heats the engine before the interior.

I removed all the plumbing and installed my own pipework, as i could not get the existing plumbing to static bleed, and the webasto would cut out due to overheating.

I will put a link on for my photobucket account in a min, just got to get the hang of this Ubuntu linux system.

Ah here we go...

I made up that bit of copper tubing so that the output of the webasto flows uphill into the expansion tank getting rid of all the air, and so is static bleeding through the expansion tank. This way uses about 12 feet less hose than the finnish conversion where the webasto is at the highest point on a 6ft long hose.

If your heater is a eberspacher BBW .....

Heater should (according to bentley manual) come on with the timer when fan switches are at 1st position and sliding heater control is all the way to the right, and will only run for 30mins.

the little radiator in the back is part of the main heating system.

I would advise checking the intake silencer before trying to fire it up as the foam inside the breaks down with age and will bugger up your combustion fan.

Syncro Mot results

Thanks for all the responses.

MOT pretty good...
  • 3 fails: needs some beam benders, fog light and horn fixing.
1 advisory: slight play in steering column top bush (actualy there's quite a bit!)

Will check the oil light first and then power steering. Steering isn't that heavy and feels the same as my old none power steered bus. Prob got a manual steering rack in it!

The heater looks complex and will have to wait for now! Good to know that people have an idea abou these.

On my bus the Webasto was mounted where the new one is now, the coil is moved to the center of the engine, the heater then has two hoses which feed to the heater in the back, and then on to the heater pipes at the front in a webasto double entry connector, underneath the sliding door. see below.

The controller is the standard webasto/eberspacher contoller, but the ambo conversion allowed you to switch on the fans by those cute little green and black switches. One is a double switch and allows the rear heater to come on, and the other does the front, but then relies on you switching on the fan switch on the heater panel. The contolls are all between the seats.

This system works very well, but you will prob find that the masses of wires have been fiddled with, and that solving the probs will be very difficult, hence why I started again. The wiring of the heaters is straight forward and you could make up a loom easily. If you find the model you have you will be able to get the manual from ebay.

Photos tell a thousand words, lets see some.

Hope this makes some sense, just done 7 shifts, and am seeing double.
