Hi all!

I have just become the proud owner of a 1982 2 litre air cooled Westy! Marvellous! Except... the owner's manual which explains how to use the heater, lights, and other associated odd buttons which NEVER appeared in my 1967 Transit... is in GERMAN! Of course it was imported from Germany, so fair enough I suppose... so, my question, where can I get hold of a copy of the original owner's manual for this van? Any PDFs online?

Also, as a matter of technical decor interest, the three button heater control does not have a fan switch on it... was that a 'delux' option??

The heater system doesn't really have a fan like modern ones. It relies on movement forward for cold air and engine revs for warm!

If you can't get warm air then I'd start out checking the cable it connected under the back end above the read wheel. It operates a flap each side that diverts warm air from the engine. When set in warm mode the cables should be pulling the flap open to divert air to the dash..

These cable ends rust away easily I fixed mine with electrical junction boxes as clamps and rods to make up the lost length.

The other dash buttons are as in any other car.

Also while your new and we all ask this same question when setting out, The dipstick is behind the drop down rear number plate and the washer water bottle is under the floor mat on the passenger side

You can very easily get the Haynes manual for these vehicles - eg. Ebay for about 10 quid or so.

You can also look for the VW factory workshop CD from Ebay, etc. too which has far more information than the Haynes manual. One thing to watch out for is that the american factory manual only covers the 2.0 litre fuel injection type 2 T3s.
