Could anyone advise on which paint would be the best to use? I have an 81 2 ltr air cooled and my tinware is rusting badly. I've replaced those bits I could get hold of and the rest, I've rubbed down, applied rust stopper and now need to repaint.
Would like to use 'Smoothrite' (by Hammerite) but a little concerned about tube sections which take the air from the heat exchangers. Should I really use a heat proof paint (like the kind used for engines / cylinder heads?) but think this doesn't have as much rust resistance as Hammerite
Any advice would be welcomed ........ as would any source of replacement tinware.

Hammerite/Smoothrite not great for tinware on Aircooled I found. It tends to scorch in hot areas. There are plenty of high-temperature paints around though. I was always re-painting tinware but found the only really good place for smoothrite was on wheels to be honest.

They do an enormous range.. heat proof at various temps up to exhaust temp.

Although the weld-thru zinc primer might survive (98% pure zinc spray) which I've used on brake back-plates and still looks OK, the following recommendation would be good (650 deg C) stainless steel look coating, intended fro manifolds but ideal IMHO:

£22 a tin inc. Vear And Tear Sounds a bit pricey but will do the job once and for all, and bet it will give a very pretty, pretty finish if you prep thoroughly

Also read the tech. sheet details thoroughly and follow all the recommendations.. which prob. suggest using their 'Pre' degreaser/cleaner first. Also might be worth getting one of their stainless steel wire brushes, excellent things, last 5 times longer than a normal one and doesn't setup additional corrosion.

I use a lot of their Rust Encapuslator, Zinc Weld-Thru, Clear Fiinsh and their famous Chassis Black Classic.

The Citrus degreaser is also very good, can be used safely in the kitchen too, just wish I could organise a discount for the club with them, but they won't play ball... they just offer usually silly freebies with a gift code that runs out 5 minutes before you order anything

However, you can't get this stuff elsewhere, it's Americun! .. and good. Some things I've found elsewhere and buy them elsewhere, almost always cheaper, but many they've cornered the UK market... their catalogue is worth getting
