DG is higher output .i.e. 78 HP as opposed to something like 60 which IMO is underpowered. Check on here for recons & replacements possibiltiies- you could easily end up paying more to replace it than to upgrade to a stronegr, more modern unit, even if you only went for a later VW petrol or diesel let alone a Scooby etc.
I would personally say get a Vege engine if you do a recon one as my personal experience of Elite (see good and mixd reviews her and elsewhere- v cheap though) is that they re-conditin only what needs to be replaced leaving you with a potentially good engine or a potentially not great one depending- they used to supply recon units to a well know VW company in SE LOndon until that company opened up an engine case they'd supplied just out of curiosity to see how good a job it was and they reralised the engiens were made up of bitsa's i.e. bits of this and that.

hello nob
the engine code is placed on the engine block with the engine number.
personally I would opt for a DF... 2.1 injection or carburettor from your old engine.
straight swap (well almost)
more power at 112 bhp

if you change a DF engine for a DG engine you will need to buy the DG inlet manifold and carbs and change your water pipes as the DG carb has a water carb heater.
