Hello all, I have recently fitted new wheels to my 87 Mutlivan and to my horror I found that the spare won't fit in the carrier under the front. I am now forced to carry it in the back which is OK for now but come the summer when I want to tour I will need to come up with a better solution as I'll need the space in the back. Has anyone got a solution? I have been thinking of keeping it in the back but standing it up ala Bay window style but will need to come up with a natty way of securing it.

All advice appreciated.

Our spare is a standard steel wheel, fits a treat

Same here.......I call it a space saver.
Its either that or by a mount but they aint cheap......

howdo, had same issue on our bus, fitted nexus van 205 tyre on standard
rim and wouldn't go in cage. excellent tyres but ended up deflating spare to shoehorn it in. stuck a good pump dehind drivers seat which doesn't leave vechile, bit annoying if you get a flat but would keep you warm on a cold winters night R

here too... keep a standard as spare

If your intent on keeping the ally as a spare then its easy enough to modify the carrier to take a wider rim/wheel,
refabricate the rear hanger with as much depth as you wont and simmilar to the front, did one a bit ago but sorry no pickies took.
Or as others say run a std wheel as a spare

i have no spare as the lpg is up front,i just keep a couple of cans of run flat tyre inflater.....

I'm probably being thick, but can you really run with a 14" standard spare if the wheels have been changed for something non standard?

well as long as the overall diameter is the same and the wheel is fitted on the hub properly then.. no

I have 16" rims with a 215/60X16 tyre on... it has the same diameter as the standard tyre which is 185/82X14.

Also, for info, there are TWO different spare wheel carriers, the later type were (supposedly) fitted to anv `vans coming out of the factory with OE Carat type alloy wheels fitted, so the deeper carrier is supposed to accomodate the 205 / 70 x 14" tyre/alloy wheel. In practice it still seems to be a tight squeeze, and can cause the tyre to touch the plastic fan housing, which then deforms when warmed up and rubs on the eleccy fan when it comes on in a traffic jam, making a load noise that scares the cr*p out of you (ask how I know this!!) or worse, can jam the fan blade and stop it working at all, probably burning out the fan motor in the process.

Fit a normal 185 x 14" tyre on a cheapo steel rim and all your troubles will be over

Just one comment, as i do the same as Kev - i do need to carry a spare set of standard wheel nus and bolts as the longer alloy ones do not work on my standard wheels

yes quite right vic20... I have to carry a set of nuts (as well as ... )
