Are any special tools needed to remove one of these. I have had constant Gear-box seal probs, so have been advised to change it.
many thanks

Spigot bearing or input shaft gearbox seal.. doing both together?
The spigot bearing can usually be got out by the normal angled approach with a quality screwdriver or fine but dull chisel, getting between the outer race and bore and collapsing it towards the centre. Then when it's sufficiently collapsed, levering ('Oicking) it out with same or something with a bit of hook ground into it.
Try not to damage the bore too much and clean up any damage before drifting a new one in (proper shouldered drift or socket a shade underv outer diameter) - tap, tap, just get it nicely aligned to start with.
There as always, is a VW tool I expect, but Sykes Pickavant do a gen. purpose one I think, looks a bit like a miniature pick-axe... an 'oicker outer, might sell it asn oil seal removal tool. The proper tool would get behind the back of the bearing, and pull it out clean I imagine.
Same technique for the gearbox input shaft seal, sortof.

Whilst I havent done one on the vw, I have with all other engines made up a drift that is a snug fit in the bearing (plastic insulation tape will make up the diameter) then half fill the hole with grease , insert said drift and give it a good smack with a lump hammer. It usually pops straight out.

I used the bolt and grease method.. with the thread ground down so it went in nicley.. Its amazing how easy it is to do..

I got nowhere with this on my 2.1, but it's nice to know it does work for some, and not just an old wives tale.. sounds like it should too, will one day try again - much easier than scratching around as above

So please correct me if i'm wrong.
Find something that fits into the hole, taking up the slack using inulation tape. Then half fill the gap with grease, insert the tool and hit with a hammer and the bearing should pop out.

That's the idea! Club hammer, and good fit, good luck... Oh, wear goggles
Are you also doing the inpout shaft seal on gearbox? 'cos you said you had a leak from gb into bellhousing? Just doing spigot is unlikely to fix much, oil-leakwise.

Yes,I am re-doing it as I replaced it about six months ago and it's started leaking again. Not sure if I pushed it in far enough, plus did not fill the lips with grease. Hopefully it will work this time.
any tips would be great....
