essex engines

hi all, has anybody here fitted the v6 essex in a van? (not the cologne type,) the old transit/capri one, and how involved it is etc, ive got the chance of a cheap rebuilt one,and was wondering if its worth the hassle plus the spending, my slow old 1600 diesel is pretty bulletproof, just fancy a change ,,

Standard Ford bolt pattern so any Ford conversion plate should attach it to the gearbox. Then you'll need to plumb it and make some engine mounts. At least the wiring should be simple. But its a very heavy 200kg ish and thirsty engine and even the last ones which were made in 1982 only produced 138bhp. It would be a long way down my list of dream engines. Even the Ford boys steer clear of them these days.
Only my opinion but you'd be better with a diesel upgrade.

VW Winkler do conversion kits for this engine (google - vw winkler).

thanks for the replys fellas its give us plenty to mull over, i know a diesel upgrade makes more sence, but i really fancy a bit of a change, something with a nice growl and a bit of oommph,but on a tight budget choices are limited,anything not too complicated,ie non turbo,non ecu,etc. maybe a volvo 5 pot ? ive got a mechanic mate chomping at the bit, weve mulled over the wiki and the winker site is a good site to know,cheers.but were now lookin for different ideas,summat radical hopefully we will have a eureka moment, any suggestions much appreicated, nowt too barmy
and the cheaper the better. cheers,,,billy

apparently they were still fitted to ambulances as late as 1991!
as said above , very heavy , and alot of cooling needed, also they dont like to rev high.
i had one in a vw beetlt baja bug in the early 90's , loads of torque!
my latest car has one in , best place for them at the mo, mine is from a 1971 JPS CAPRI!
may be interested in yours if you dont use it.!
