I'm throwing myself in at the deep end and doing the paint on my van myself.going to be a roller job which is fine i just need to prep it first.

Need a decent sander for as few pennies as poss?

also dont know what else i will need to prep and the best places to shop for it???

What you have to be careful of is losing heart with a rubber sanding block and assuming that an orbital sander will make it much faster. In theory it does but it can also take way too much paint off, gouge into surfaces, burn paint and remove too much near any edges or high points and kick up clouds of dust that goes everywhere. Much better to spend a couple of weekends doing it by hand.

I did use an ordinary square sander for areas I'd had to fill but wet and dry and a bucket of soapy water is generally the best way. Less dust too!

I used a random orbit sander, got a Bosch one for about £40 as I figured sanding a whole van would be a bit much for a cheapy one. It did end up costing more in sanding discs than paint though....
But a lot of my van needed to go back to bare metal. Don't use a sander on corners you will go through to the metal straight way, but a sander will be fine on the flat surfaces. select grade of wet and dry carefully, coarsest I used was 120 for the roughest bits and getting gouge marks out of the metal previous owner had created with a sander...

I picked up a Skil sander, quite cheap and works well.

well i bought myself a few rolls of wet and dry and made up a sanding block and thinking i might go the elbow grease route but i have managed to pick up a disc sander of a guy at work for £20 so will help if i get lazy or want to buff it up after painted
